N/A The Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower of Pisa, called by Italians Torre pendente di Pisa, or just La Torre di Pisa, is the world's most famous freestanding bell tower. It’s situated in the centre of Campo dei Miracoli, just behind the Cathedral. The construction of this work of art was performed in three stages and took about 174 years. The tower soon began to sink due to its poorly laid foundation, so the engineers built higher floors with one side taller than the other. This made the tower begin to lean in the other direction, resting at an angle of 5.5 degrees. Even if it doesn't seem like a lot, this makes it end up 4.5 metres away from where it should. The tower has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and every year attracts tourists from all over the world who want to see if it’s actually curved.
N/A Campo dei Miracoli
Campo dei Miracoli, meaning Field of Miracles, is a wide, walled area lying in the centre of Pisa, one of the most picturesque cities in Tuscany. This is one of the main centres for Medieval art in the world. It consists of four great religious edifices: the Duomo, the Leaning Tower (the cathedral's campanile), the Baptistery and the Camposanto. In 1987, the entire square was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the very heart of the Campo dei Miracoli, you can see a Medieval cathedral which dates back to 1064 and remains the originator of the distinctive Pisan Romanesque style. Its interiors show a strong Byzantine and Muslim influence. The church also contains the mummified body of St. Ranieri, who is Pisa's patron saint. Opposite the west end of the Duomo stands the largest baptistery in Italy, dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Camposanto Monumentale (‘the monumental cemetery’) is at the northern edge of the Campo. It’s said to be the most beautiful cemetery in the world. Legend has it that it was built around a shipload of sacred soil from Golgotha, brought back to Pisa from the Fourth Crusade. This field really is full of miracles.
