N/A Castel Nuovo
Castel Nuovo became a new royal residence under the rule of Charles I in 1266. Before, the capital of the Kingdom of Naples was Palermo. However, when it was moved to Naples, he ordered a new castle, not far from the sea, built to house the court. Surrounding the castle was the city’s historical centre, where many famous historical events took place.
N/A Castel dell'Ovo
Castel dell'Ovo, which means Egg Castle, is located on a small island, the Megarides, and dates back to the 6th Century BC. Originally a magnificent villa, it was reconstructed into a monastery by the Normans. The castle is connected by a small causeway, where just-married couples often want to have their wedding photos taken. The castle is rectangular in shape. Inside, there are several buildings which are often used for exhibitions, concerts and spectacles. The name of the castle derives from a Medieval legend which holds that the poet Virgil, known as a great sorcerer, put a magical egg in the foundations of the castle to support them. Overlooking the city, the castle offers an excellent view of the Naples waterfront and its surroundings.
N/A San Martino Museum
The Certosa di San Martino is a former monastery complex which now houses a museum. It’s the most visible landmark of Naples. The construction of the monastery was inaugurated under the rule of Queen Joan I, and it was dedicated to St. Martin of Tours. In the early 1800s, under French rule the monastery was closed and abandoned by the religious order. Today, there’s a museum with an exhibit of traditional scenes of Jesus' birth.
N/A Royal Palace
The Royal Palace is one of four residences of Bourbon Kings during their rule of the Kingdom of Naples (1730 - 1860). The palace was designed by Domenico Fontana, and raised upon the site of a Spanish residence from the early 16th Century. After that, it was reconstructed by Gaetano Genovese in 1838, after a fire damaged much of the palace. Today, the palace is home to the famous San Carlo Theatre, a museum, the National Library of Naples and many city offices.
